Ever find yourself yelling before you even realize you are mad? Or agreeing to something you didn’t want to do, then wondering why you couldn’t say no? That’s not you being irrational—it’s your nervous system doing its job. In this episode, we explore the default survival responses wired into your mind and body and why understanding them is crucial for healing, relationships, and self-trust.
You don’t choose your default survival mode, it is automatic. Your nervous system chooses how to respond to perceived stress or danger based on what it believes will keep you safe—not what logically makes sense. This means yelling in a meeting, shutting down during an argument, or appeasing a partner may all be responses shaped by previous experiences, not current reality.
The most common survival responses include:
Each driven by your body’s physiological survival instincts and past lived experiences.
Biologically, humans are wired to flee first. If that fails, we fight. If fighting doesn’t seem viable, we freeze or shut down. But your specific default is often shaped by past experiences:
Your nervous system remembers what worked— and it defaults to that in situations that feel familiar, even if it no longer serves you in the present.
You’re not bad for defaulting to freeze. You’re not weak for choosing appease. Each response helped you survive. But now, they might be getting in the way of the life and relationships you want. Awareness is the first step to interrupting the autopilot.
